Green light for £5m for major roundabout improvement

PLANS to improve the Crewe Green roundabout in Crewe have been submitted for approval by Cheshire East Council’s cabinet.

The proposals, which will be funded by £5m of a local Growth Fund, provided by the government, and private development schemes.

Work would take place to removal most traffic signals and created a larger oval-shaped roundabout, which would widen exit points.

Safer routes would be created for pedestrians, cyclists and mobility scooters in the form of footpaths, cycle lanes and signal-controlled crossings.

The council also has funding to invest in the Congleton Link Road, Poynton Relief Road and Middlewich Eastern Bypass.

It is believed that improvements to Crewe Green roundabout will help increase connectivity and traffic flow around the town.

The work would speed up journeys to Leighton Hospital and cater for an increase in traffic up to 2030.

Cllr David Brown, a cabinet member for highways and infrastructure, said: “This scheme represents a further landmark in the council’s long-term strategy for improving connectivity, creating employment and housing opportunities and preparing Crewe for the arrival of high-speed rail in the shape of HS2.

“Together with the replacement of the Sydney Road Bridge, this will relieve the motorists and commercial drivers of some of the frustrations they have faced owing to limited highways capacity.”

The Cabinet will meet tomorrow (Tuesday October 18), and if the plans are approved, work could begin in spring 2017.
