San Carlo swallows another city centre eatery

WELL-known Italian restaurant group San Carlo has acquired Manchester restaurant 47 King Street West.

The site is adjacent to two of San Carlo Group’s 17 award winning restaurants – Cicchetti, which is on the ground floor of House of Fraser department store and the group’s high profile flagship venue San Carlo.

The Italian family-owned group has three further restaurants in Manchester – Fumo at 1 St Peter’s Square and Bottega and Gran Café within Selfridges, Exchange Square.

San Carlo chairman, Carlo Distefano, said: “We’re delighted to have acquired this site, it’s a great addition to the Group and we look forward to unveiling our plans for this prime location in the near future.”

Mike Hymanson, former owner of 47 King Street West said: “We wish San Carlo well in this new and exciting venture. As a family business we have enjoyed an incredible five years made possible by our fantastic staff and so many customers who have become and will remain friends.”

47 King Street West made national headlines last year, following a hen party which resulted in scathing comments being left on the eaterie’s Facebook website.

That resulted in staff replying, describing the party as “cheap chav trash” and “ugly peasants”.

But the group of women had said they were disappointed by how disorganised the staff were and left comments about the seating arrangements and the attitude of the manager.

In reply to the remarks the restaurant branded the women the worst diners ever to enter the premises. It said: ‘The chaviest worst most vile people ever to grace our restaurant. Wouldn’t know fine dining if it slapped them in their ugly faces!’ It continued: ‘Best thing ever is that they won’t return! Bottom of the barrel.
