Which schools are the best in the region?

THE top performing schools in the North West are revealed in The Sunday Times Parent Power list this Sunday (November 27).

Despite slipping nationally from 20th to 26th place nationally this year, Withington Girls’ School in Manchester comfortably leads the pack for the North West independent schools.

GCSE results were particularly impressive with 95.5% of entries achieving all A*- As. In compliance with its founder’s wish, the school keeps itself small, giving the 600 pupils the opportunity for individual development.

Other significant climbers this year are Birkenhead School in Wirral and Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester that have improved by 113 and 68 places respectively.

Altrincham Grammar School for Girls has gone down one place this year but it is still the top state school in the North West.

Nationally, it remains a solid 18 places in front of its closest rival in the region, The Liverpool Blue Coat School, which won The Sunday Times State Secondary School of the Year award last year.

The number of A*-B grades at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls was almost 10 % points higher than at Liverpool Blue Coat, standing at an impressive 90.4% of all entries.
