Yang Sing celebrates 40th anniversary with £250K investment

ONE of Manchester’s longest-established and best-known Chinese Cantonese restaurants, the Yang Sing on Princess Street, has announced a £250,000 upgrade as it prepares to celebrate its 40-year anniversary in 2017.

The 140-seat restaurant, in the heart of the city’s Chinatown, first opened its doors in 1977 and owners the Yeung family have invested in a number of major improvements to both future-proof the grade-two listed restaurant building – along with updating its dining room spaces, renewing the aesthetics whilst retaining the comfort and intimacy that the dining environment is well-known for.

The Yang Sing is aiming to make 2017 a year of celebration, with a number of events to commemorate 40 successful years of business.

In a first for the company, it has also partnered with Deliveroo, to offer a ‘dim sum on demand’ delivery service, so Manchester residents can order meals from the restaurant kitchen to their door in average of 32 minutes.

Over the last four decades, the Yang Sing has become an internationally renowned restaurant, attracting diners from far and wide, recently including the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and David Cameron.

The executive chef at Yang Sing, 63-year-old Harry Yeung, began his culinary apprenticeship in the kitchens of Hong Kong, aged 13, under the watchful eye of his father.

He has become one of the most celebrated Chinese chefs in the UK, serving exquisite dim sum and Cantonese cuisine for a contemporary audience, whilst keeping an eye on honouring the traditions and techniques of the old masters.

Yeung received an MBE in the 2004 New Year Honours list for the recognition of his contribution to the Chinese community and has also amassed many awards for Yang Sing; including the first ever ‘ethnic’ eatery to be awarded a Pestle & Mortar for best restaurant, from the good food guide, 2 AA Rosettes, and is regularly listed in the Michelin guide; the Times, the Guardian and the Telegraph top 10 listings.

Yang Sing co-ownerBonnie Yeung, pictured, said: “What began as a small family affair in 1977 has grown to become synonymous with the cultural and culinary landscape of the city of Manchester.

“We are aiming to make 2017 a year of both celebrating our past and looking to the future. The time and money invested into the upcoming improvement works will ensure that Yang Sing, and Canton House where we are housed are future-proofed.”

Bonnie continued: “We are also delighted to have joined Deliveroo because we felt that it absolutely plugged a gap in the market and enabled us to extend our offering to diners, old and new.

“Yang Sing means something special to many Manchester restaurant-goers.

“Across four decades we have seen grandparents on first dates, the birth of their children, their marriages, and then the birth of their children. It is very heartening to see several generations of the same family walk through the door. We have a shared history and heritage which is something really special; something that money cannot buy.

“We have seen other restaurants open – and close, but we have remembered and looked after our loyal customers, and that has stood us in good stead.

“Over time these patrons have become friends and even part of the family. Our relationships have looked after us as we have looked after them over the years.

“The trust of our customers, built up over many years combined with the continuity of being the same family owned and run business, which still have the passion for what we do, is what has helped Yang Sing to achieve this longevity and become a rite of passage for the region’s foodies.”

Caroline Hazlehurst, general manager at Deliveroo, said: “Yang Sing is one of Manchester’s favourite food institutions with an award-winning chef, Harry Yeung, offering re-interpretations on Cantonese classics for a contemporary audience, whilst keeping an eye on honouring the traditions and techniques of the old masters.

“Foodies travel from far and wide to sample the Yang Sing’s famed dim sum delights, so as the restaurant prepares to mark 40 years of business, we are very pleased to partner with them to offer delivery to customers’ doors for the very first time in their history.”
