Work starting on £6.5m city centre car park upgrade
A Liverpool city centre car park is to close this week to undergo a £6.5m transformation.
Signs will go up this morning (Tuesday, February 7) informing motorists that from Friday, February 10 there will be no access to the level-entry only car park on Victoria Street.
Work will begin next week to create a five-floor car park providing 333 spaces including 15 motorcycle spaces and 28 cycle spaces.
The new car park, which is expected to open in December, will also provide three electric vehicle charging bays.
Adjoining the car park will also be a three-storey block designed to accommodate restaurant/bar units with a rooftop terrace – and outdoor seating due to a wider pavement area.
The scheme, funded by Liverpool City Council, has been designed to reduce congestion and pollution caused by the current 121-space car park which does not publicise spaces and causes motorists to circle the site waiting for an available spot.
To be clad in coursed stone with large glazed openings, the new car park will also lead to the planting of 90 new trees around the Victoria Street area which will offset the loss of 36 currently on site.
Cllr Malcolm Kennedy, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “Victoria Street is a vital artery in Liverpool’s retail core and a high quality car park will provide a huge boost for surrounding businesses such as the Metquarter.
“I look forward to seeing this new, eco-friendly car park open and start providing cyclists and electric vehicles more options when travelling into our city centre.”
To be built by contractors Willmott Dixon, the new car park will be accessed from Crosshall Street with exits on Sir Thomas Street.
Whilst construction itself will not commence until mid-March, there are a series of early works required to enable construction to begin. These works will start from Monday, February 13.
