Plan for Mayfield temporary office and events space submitted

A planning application has been submitted by The Mayfield Development Partnership to create temporary office and events space on part of the former Mayfield station site in Manchester city centre.

Details about the proposed facilities, which would be in place for up to three years, are in a planning application which has been submitted to Manchester City Council.

The partnership – a joint venture between Manchester City Council, LCR, Transport for Greater Manchester and U+I, the mixed-use property regeneration specialist – has a long-term plan to create an iconic £850m mixed-use community over the next 10 years, including commercial, residential and leisure facilities.

The 24-acre site, next to Piccadilly Station, has been derelict for more than a decade.

If consent for the temporary works is granted, it would ensure that part of the site is used while the wider and permanent plans for the overall Mayfield site are progressed.

Subject to permission, the temporary facilities would be at the Baring Street end of the site and include office and co-working space.

U+I would have its Manchester project office on the site and there would be a garden and space for small-scale events and exhibitions, including consultation on the wider, long-term Mayfield plans.

The wider Mayfield regeneration vision will potentially provide 1,300 homes, 807,000sq ft of office space, a 350-bedroom hotel, retail and leisure facilities and a new city park, creating over 7,500 office, retail, leisure and construction jobs.

The long-term proposals will seek to enhance many of the site’s historic features and include developing and improving the River. The intention is to maintain the historic buildings that still stand and make the most of the area’s built heritage.
