Footballers and celebs drive Cheshire village home prices past £1m

The average price of a detached in the posh Cheshire village of Alderley Edge – home to a raft of high profile Premier League footballers and Coronation Street celebrities – has smashed through the £1m price barrier.
Analysis by Countrywide Research for estate and letting agents Bridgfords revealed house prices in the village rose by 15% in 2016.
Bridgfords, which has 79 offices across the north of the country, including Alderley Edge is part of the Countrywide Group.
Residents have included former Manchester United players Rio Ferdinand, Robin Van Persie and Andy Cole. David and Victoria Beckham have also lived there.
Others are football legend Sir Alex Ferguson, Coronation Street star William Roache, actresses Denise Welch, Samia Smith and Helen Flanagan as well as the former home of the brilliant mathematician and wartime code-breaker Alan Turing.
The analysis shows that over 2016 prices in the area soared, making the average cost of a detached family home higher in Alderley Edge than anywhere in the country north of Watford.
Alderley Edge is one of only nine other towns outside the M25 where the average value of a detached home has passed the seven-figure mark.
Alderley Edge ranks fourth behind Ascot, Beaconsfield and Virginia Water.
The first £1m house sold in Alderley Edge was in 2000 when a large family home on Beechfield Road was bought for £1.1m.
Today, the research shows, some 40% of homes in Alderley Edge sold for at least £1m and in some of the southern fringes of the town, the figure is close to 100 per cent. Countrywide research calculates that 78 per cent of homes are bought by newcomers to the town.
Keiron Humphreys, regional director at Bridgfords, said: “The appeal of Alderley Edge is not hard to miss.
“The mix of period and new homes many set in generously sized plots, discretely hidden by stone walls and mature landscaping, offer the privacy often sought by those with the largest budgets.
“This coupled with fast rail links into Manchester city centre and close proximity to the M6 and Manchester Airport have ensured it’s ranking as one of the most desirable places in which to live in the North West.”
