3 Cs to find the perfect shirt

In association with Hemingway Tailors

While you might think there isn’t a lot to buying a shirt, you’d be surprised at how much can go into finding the perfect one. Whether you’re wanting to look your very best for an interview, business meeting, first date, or any other social event, you’ll be wanting a shirt that not only fits perfectly but also suits your style.

A shirt you love will play its part in breeding that inner confidence, so we’ve helped you identify which 3 things you should look for in your new shirt.

Cut

The cut of the shirt refers to the general fit of it. Shirts tends to come in one of 3 main styles, classic fit, tailored fit or slim fit. Now each of these styles are better suited to different body shapes however since we’re all build differently it’s difficult to provide an exact guide in terms of which fit suits which body type.

We can however highlight a few common mistakes we see men making when it comes to the fit of their shirt. If you’re a larger than average man then don’t try to hide a few extra curves by wearing a shirt that’s too large as this will often leave you looking even bigger. Alternatively, if you’re very slim then wear a shirt which sits on you comfortably and isn’t too tight or loose to the extent where it drowns you.

Of course, you also have the option of having a bespoke made shirt which takes into account your body measurements and ensures a fit that’ll flatter your body.

Cuff

The cuff of the shirt is also important in dictating its look. The most commonly worn shirts are single cuffs since their versatility allows them to be worn for both formal and informal occasions. Their commonly seen in a wide range of environments stretching from work wear to making up a smart casual outfit for a social outing.

Double cuffed shirts on the other hand offer a dressier alternative and are ideal to make a mark at events such as weddings. They can be teamed up with a pair of cufflinks which can help to add an extra dimension to your look.

Collar

The collar of a shirt is probably the least recognised aspect by many. Other than using its size as a guide for fit for many ready-made shirts, the style of the collar itself is often disregarded. However when buying a bespoke or made to measure shirt you’ll come to realise the varying options available.

The main collar styles you’re likely to come across are the classic collar, forward point collar, button down collar, and the winged collar. Each of these has a distinct look and can on occasion look better on certain body types.

We recommend you look at all of the options available to you before deciding on your final shirt. Trying a shirt in a different fit or with a different collar style could open the door to a much-loved style.
