Jobs to go as DHL axes NW depot

PARCEL delivery group DHL is closing a North West depot with the loss of 80 jobs.

Staff at the site in Middleton were informed late last month and the facility is expected to close in March. A fall in business, partly caused by falling sales at Marks & Spencer – one of its biggest customers – is believed to be behind the move.

A spokesperson for DHL said: “Our customer has been conducting a review of its logistics and supply chain operation and has proposed to cease operations at the site in Middleton.

“In December 2008, DHL told all 80 of its employees at the site of this proposal and its intention to begin a 30-day period of consultation with the employees and their elected representatives.

“As this consultation process is ongoing, it would not be appropriate to comment on the outcome.”
