Work starts on Sharp Project recording studio

BUILDING work has started on a two-storey recording studio at the Sharp Project media centre in east Manchester.
George Atkins, a Salford-based producer who has worked with Lily Allen, is moving his 80 Hertz Recording Studios operation to the centre.
Working with collaborator John Wood he has designed a 2,650 sq ft facility with a six-metre high live room, which will be used for recording, mixing and mastering music.
It will also be used for music composition, post-production for television, film scores and advertisments. There will also be studio space for hire.
As well as working with bands Mr Atkins works with toy manufacturers composing advertising music for the Power Rangers, Ben 10 and Tamagotchi series.
He said: “Our unique selling point is the huge live room, allowing for beautiful natural acoustics in combination with ability to use it for many other ancillary uses, such as an events venue and photo studio.”
The studio is due for completion early in the new year. The Sharp Project is based at the former Sharp Electronics warehouse off Oldham Road and is now home to 25 companies specialising in digital content production, digital media and production for TV and film.
The £16.5m refurbishment has been funded by Manchester City Council, the Northwest Regional Development Agency and the European Regional Development Fund.
