Climate change the key issue for leadership team

ADDRESSING climate change remains the key challenge for 2009,  the North West Business Leadership Team said today.

Chief executive Geoffrey Piper said while the gloomy economic picture was a “challenging backcloth”, matters environmental remain “first among our ongoing challenges.”

He said the organisation was taking part in a joint climate change campaign with the Northwest Regional Development Agency and Business in the Community, aimed at mitigating and adapting to the effects of the phenomena.

“This is a two year project to deliver collective business action…thus providing an opportunity to demonstrate collective business leadership on what is undoubtedly the greatest environmental challenge of our time.”

He said Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture had proved to be a “landmark” for both the city and wider region”, and hailed the success of the Liverpool Summit – a two day event in October which attracted the likes of Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy and Kofi Annan, the former secretary general of the United Nations.

Mr Piper said 2008 also saw the BLT adopt a new mission statement, which is to: “Make the North West the UK’s most attractive region in which to live and work for generations to come”.

The organisation – made up of high-level executives and professionals – also re-affirmed its commitment to helping the region improve performance in four key areas: skills; national and international links; innovation and sustainable development and promoting the region’s advantages.

Looking ahead he added: “NWBLT looks forward to playing its full part in contributing to the North West’s well-being against what we hope will be an improved economic outlook during 2009.”
