Five arrests made following immigration raid on Salford textiles firm

A SALFORD-based textiles firm could face a fine of up to £50,000 after a raid from UK Border Agency officials found five people illegally working there.

The agency said that following an intelligence-led operation, a raid on Sleepwise Textiles of Broughton Road East in Salford last Wednesday led to two men being arrested for working in breach of their visas and another two men arrested for entering the country without leave to do so.

All four were arrested and remain in detention. A fifth man who was also arrested for illegally entering the UK has been released on immigration bail.

The business was issued with a civil penalty notice and if it is unable to prove that it conducted the correct pre-employment checks on staff could be fined up to £10,000 per worker employed.

Eddy Montgomery, North West operations director for UK Border Agency said: “This is the latest in a series of operations we’ve carried out to tackle immigration crime in Manchester, and more are planned.

“Illegal working has a serious impact on communities, taking jobs from those who are genuinely allowed to work. Businesses which operate outside the law should be warned that they will be found and they will be punished.”
