A £300m contract to build a slew of schools in Tameside has been sealed by construction group Carillion and its joint venture partners.

The first phase will see 12 secondary and special schools built over the next three years, at a cost of £173m.

This includes two privately financed schools, which will see construction start next month. Carillion then will be paid £21m to provide facilities management services for the schools over 25 years.

The Local Education Partnership between Carillion, Tameside Council and Building Schools for the Future Investments will agree further new schools for the borough to be completed in the next 10 years, with an estimated capital value of £120m.

Private finance for the project is being funded by a combination of borrowing and equity, with Barclays providing £50m of debt finance and the LEP members contributing £4.2m of equity, of which Carillion will provide £3.4m and the other two members £400,000 each.

The Tameside Building Schools for the Future public-private partnership contract is part of the government’s £45bn Building Schools for the Future programme.
