The University of Liverpool is celebrating its new Liverpool School of Architecture (LSA) building today (November 5) with an official opening ceremony led by Game of Thrones actor and architecture alumnus, Anton Lesser.

The new space provides students and researchers with cutting edge teaching and research facilities, including virtual reality and digital design suites, collaborative workspaces and a dedicated exhibition area designed to showcase their work.

The completion of this project represents an important milestone in the history of the Liverpool School of Architecture, which was founded in 1894.

Designed by Irish-based architects O’Donnell + Tuomey, the extension has been carefully integrated with LSA’s historic building, creating modern teaching and collaboration spaces while respecting the character of the existing campus.

The design was decided by an innovative competition process, which saw LSA students and staff play an active role in determining the design of the new building, alongside an international jury committee featuring high calibre individuals across art, architecture and design.

Prof Richard Black, University of Liverpool provost and deputy vice-chancellor said: “Today’s event represents a significant milestone for the university as we formally open this outstanding building.

“The LSA building is the latest in a series of major investments in our facilities for research and education, and an iconic space at the centre of our campus.

“It is designed to promote both innovation and collaboration, and the reception from students and colleagues has been hugely positive. My thanks go to everyone who has contributed to the building’s successful completion.”

The event sees the conferment of an honorary degree (HonLittD Honorary Doctor of Letters) on alumnus guest of honour, actor Anton Lesser.

He said: “When I was first told about the honorary degree, I felt a little undeserving of recognition, particularly as my career had taken me in a rather different direction from the one I might have imagined when I studied Architecture at Liverpool.

“But alongside that came a genuine delight at feeling seen and appreciated – together with the rather wonderful prospect of being able to tell my children that I was now an Honorary Doctor.

“I think I now understand what imposter syndrome feels like, but I have not let that get in the way of enjoying this very special occasion.”

He added: “I’m hugely grateful to the university for this honour, and particularly delighted to be returning to open the new School of Architecture building.

“My time here studying architecture was an important part of my journey, and it means a great deal to be able to celebrate the future of LSA.”

An exhibition open to the public until December 18, 2026, charts the history of the school, its alumni, buildings, and projects.

The Liverpool School of Architecture: A Retrospective exhibition includes works from across the world as well as drawings, fabrics, films, books, products, and a series of architectural models crafted by our alumni and staff.

Prof Fei Chen, head of the Liverpool School of Architecture, said: “The opening of the new building sees the Liverpool School of Architecture provide state-of-the-art facilities for its students.

“The building’s design reflects a democratic co-production process and forward-looking pedagogical thinking. It stands as an exemplar of how spatial configuration can shape architectural education, enhance its quality, and nurture talent.”

The University of Liverpool is currently ranked 10th in the UK for Architecture in the Guardian University Guide and in the world top 150 in the prestigious QS World University Rankings.
