Accrington hosts successful apprentice decorating contest

Apprentices from across the North West headed to Accrington to test their painting and decorating skills at an event organised by national trade body, the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA).
Sixteen apprentices took part in the annual Painting and Decorating Association Apprentice of the Year competition, held at Accrington & Rossendale College on Thursday (March 24).
The six-hour contest offered apprentices from across the UK the opportunity to test their skills against their peers.
They were tasked with replicating a given design, testing not only their accuracy and skill but their ability to perform under pressure.
Neil Ogilvie, chief executive of the PDA, said: “It was great to be back at Accrington and Rossendale college for the Apprentice of the Year competition.
“The quality of entries this year has been outstanding, these young people have really showcased their talent and professionalism and we’re all looking forward to judging their excellent work.”
Jade Oakes, Painting and Decorator Apprentice at Ciaran Rooney Painting, was one of the trainees taking part. She said:
“It’s my first time doing a PDA Apprentice of the Year competition and I’ve absolutely loved it.
“Competitions like this are amazing, it shows you it’s not just about painting a wall, it’s about time management, precision and creativity as well.”
The contest is the first of three heats nationally taking place in spring. In April, the PDA contest will hold its Midlands heat in Coventry, and in May the Southern heat takes place in Kent.
Finalists will be invited to the PDA Premier Trophy Awards Ceremony at Plaisterers’ Hall, London later this year, where the winner is announced.
