A Glasgow medtech firm developing ultrasonic scalpels for robotic-assisted surgery has raised \u00a33.4m to commercialise its technology.<\/p>\n
Nami Surgical secured the funding in an extension round led by a \u00a32m investment from the Scottish National Investment Bank.<\/p>\n
Existing investors Eos Advisory, Scottish Enterprise and the Investment Fund for Scotland, which is managed by Maven Capital Partners and delivered by the British Business Bank, also participated.<\/p>\n
Nikki Palfrey, chief executive of Nami Surgical, said: “We have reached an important stage in Nami’s development, moving from demonstrating the potential of our technology to building the capabilities and partnerships needed to bring it into the surgical environment. This investment gives us the resources to accelerate that journey, strengthening our engineering team in Glasgow while continuing to generate the evidence and relationships required for commercial adoption.”<\/p>\n
The company will use the funding to expand its research and development team, creating five jobs at its headquarters at Hillington in southwest Glasgow.<\/p>\n
Nami was founded in 2021 as a University of Glasgow spin-out by Dr Nico Fenu and Dr Rebecca Cleary.<\/p>\n
The company has developed a patent-protected ultrasonic scalpel that can bend and rotate within robotic surgical systems while retaining the tissue-cutting and sealing capabilities of ultrasonic technology.<\/p>\n
Ultrasonic scalpels use high-frequency vibrations to cut tissue and seal blood vessels simultaneously, but have traditionally been too large and rigid for effective integration with robotic surgical devices.<\/p>\n
Nami’s technology miniaturises the transducer, the component that generates the ultrasonic vibration, enabling greater flexibility for surgeons.<\/p>\n
The company says it is working to form strategic partnerships with major global healthcare companies as adoption of robotic-assisted surgery expands.<\/p>\n
The funding follows the appointment of Nikki Palfrey as chief executive in January and Nami securing ISO 13485 certification, which standardises the safety and quality of medical devices.<\/p>\n
The business was also named Bio-tech Manufacturer of the Year at the 2026 Made in Scotland Awards.<\/p>\n
Ailsa Young, investment director at the Scottish National Investment Bank, added: “Robotic-assisted surgery is a rapidly growing field in the medtech industry worldwide. Nami’s innovative IP introduces new capabilities to the field, demonstrating clear potential to deliver a broader range of robotic-assisted procedures more effectively and safely.”<\/p>\n
