The sports agency run by former Republic of Ireland footballer Stephen Hunt has been hit by a winding-up petition for unpaid taxes.

HM Revenue & Customs filed the petition against Stephen Hunt Sports Management in court on Friday, TheBusinessDesk.com can reveal. HMRC regularly uses winding-up petitions against companies that have failed to settle overdue tax liabilities.

Hunt played in the Premier League with Reading, Hull City and Wolverhampton Wanderers in a career spanning more than 450 games that also included 39 international appearances and stints at Crystal Palace, Brentford, Ipswich Town and Coventry City.

He set up his eponymous sports management agency in 2017 and has specialised in representing Irish footballers and managers. The Gloucestershire-registered company offers contract negotiations, transfer deals and player mentoring.

The agency’s roster includes Republic of Ireland assistant manager John O’Shea, Brighton & Hove Albion and Coventry City goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, and Hull City’s John Egan and Hugh Parker.

Hunt’s wife, Joanne, resigned as a director of the company in February, according to filings at Companies House.

Stephen Hunt Sports Management has been approached for comment. HMRC does not comment on individual taxpayer cases.
