Bin workers to strike throughout summer

Bin workers in South Gloucestershire have announced plans to strike throughout the summer months.
The rubbish collectors say they are planning to strike until at least September over a pay dispute.
The Unite union said 15 workers are to begin “indefinite” strike action following a dispute with Suez.
The workers walked out earlier this month after rejecting an eight per cent pay offer.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Suez is a highly profitable company making tens of millions and can afford to give its struggling staff a reasonable wage increase.”
A spokesperson for SUEZ said the eight per cent pay offer for 2023, along with a similar pay increase last year saw pay increases of 15 to 16.75 per cent over two years.
The spokesperson added: “This was rejected by Unite the trade union, who are seeking a 15 per cent increase for 2023 alone, which would deliver pay increases in excess of 22 per cent over two years.
“Our door is still open and we welcome further discussions with Unite.”
South Gloucestershire Council said: “We are working with the staff Suez has available to provide the best level of service possible under the circumstances.
“We hope that constructive talks between Suez and its staff will help to reach a swift resolution to this matter and thank residents for their patience and understanding.”
