Cornish Metals mines South Africa for new chief executive

Don Turvey, chief executive of Cornish Metals

Mineral exploration company Cornish Metals has appointed South African mining executive Don Turvey as its new chief executive.

He replaces Richard Williams, who left in March, with non-executive director Ken Armstrong stepped into an interim role.

Cornish Metals has owned the South Crofty tin project since 2016 and wants to restart production in three years’ time.

Patrick Anderson, chair of Cornish Metals, stated: “I am confident that Don, with his extensive commercial, operations and project execution experience, will capably lead Cornish Metals forward in order to realise the best potential for the company and our stakeholders as we advance South Crofty towards production in 2027.”

Turvey will begin work on September 1, subject to approval of a UK work visa.

He has been CEO of private, ASX and AIM-listed mining companies where he has successfully funded and taken new projects and historic mines to production, as well as leading a number of M&A transactions.

Turvey added: “I look forward to joining Cornish Metals’ management and working directly with the project team to develop South Crofty to production and to realise the corporate vision to bring responsible tin mining back to Cornwall.”
