Vistry Group has opened the Brandon Ball Skills Academy at its Matford Brook development in Alphington, in honour of Brandon Ball, a former employee trainee quantity surveyor who died aged 21.

It will provide onsite training, mentoring and skills development, as well as opportunities for local people to gain work experience and vocational qualifications.

Emma Colin, regional managing director at Vistry’s Devon South West office, said: “The industry needs 45,500 new workers per year to meet UK construction demand and we’re pleased to launch this fantastic new facility for the local community to help bridge the gap.”

The training facility is a partnership between local authorities, schools and colleges, training partner Greenlight and the local supply chain.

Vistry Group, which incorporates Bovis Homes, Countryside Homes and Linden Homes, will have 10 Skills Academies operating across the country by the end of this year.

Dan Symons, director at Greenlight Safety and Training, added: “There are a range of challenges facing the construction industry in 2024, and if we’re to meet them head-on we need to generate as many opportunities for training and employment that we can in the region.

“The Vistry Plus Skills Academy in Alphington is perfectly placed to deliver these opportunities for local people, and we’re hugely excited to help train the next generation of skilled construction workers.”
