Swindon Borough Council has postponed a decision on plans for a 700-home development at the former Highworth golf course.

A report scheduled for cabinet on 1 July will now be delayed to allow the new administration to review alternative uses for the site.

The council’s previous cabinet had agreed to explore a housing-led scheme on part of the site, delivering up to 700 homes including affordable housing.

Cllr Matty Courtliff, the council’s cabinet member for housing and property, said: “We recognise the importance of the former Highworth golf course to the local community and this administration is committed to listening to our residents.

“We will take the time to consider the options for the site, including how it aligns with the administration’s priorities for green spaces.”

Following recent local elections, the new Cabinet wishes to explore all options for the site.

The council said it will work with Highworth Town Council, local residents and the Save Highworth Golf Course campaign group.

Cllr Courtliff added: “This approach will help ensure that any future plans for the site are taken forward with input from those who live in and care about Highworth.”

A revised report will be presented to cabinet at a later date.
