A 150-year-old railway shed in Bath has been granted planning permission to become purpose-built student accommodation with 103 bed spaces.<\/p>\n
Bath and North East Somerset Council’s planning committee approved the conversion of Grosvenor House on Lower Bristol Road, subject to completion of a Section 106 agreement.<\/p>\n
The building, originally constructed in the 1870s as a shed for the Great Western Railway company, has been minimally used for many years despite its accessible location.<\/p>\n
Richard Crawshay-Jones from Bathford Partners said: “This site has a fascinating history, which we were keen to recognise in the plans for redevelopment. Our track record of delivering high-quality student accommodation means we’re well-placed to make the most of this site by creating places where students will want to live.”<\/p>\n
The scheme will create 22 student clusters across three floors, with a mix of three-, five- and six-bedroom flats.<\/p>\n
A new second floor will be added within the existing structure.<\/p>\n
Each flat will have a shared kitchen, living and dining area, serving second, third and fourth year students as well as postgraduates.<\/p>\n
The building is recognised as a non-designated heritage asset and lies within two World Heritage Sites.<\/p>\n
Changes to the exterior will include removing a glazed ground floor canopy to reveal the building’s original character.<\/p>\n
PV panels will be installed on the roof for renewable energy generation, while new landscaping will introduce green space.<\/p>\n
Alison Lugsden, associate planner at Nash Partnership, added: “Located so close to the city centre, this site is in a prime sustainable position for both universities. It offers easy access to a range of transport options, amenities and services, and retrofitting the existing building will substantially reduce its operational carbon footprint.”<\/p>\n
