Someone who normally avoids alcohol before lunch can decide that 9.30am is perfectly reasonable because they are “on holiday”.

And when a gate number finally appears on the departure board, hundreds of people can suddenly abandon their seats and march towards it as if the aircraft is about to leave immediately.

For airports and the businesses operating inside them, this is not simply amusing passenger behaviour. It is a commercial opportunity.

The modern airport is part transport hub, part shopping centre and part behavioural laboratory. Passengers have time to fill, money to spend and, once they pass security, relatively few alternatives to the businesses operating inside the terminal.

Recent research suggests that passenger psychology is becoming just as important to airport retail as passenger numbers.

A study published in the International Journal of Retail & Distribution Management examined the behaviour of 502 international travellers who had visited airport duty-free shops. It found that time pressure and the desire for an enjoyable shopping experience could influence emotions, which in turn affected impulse purchases.

That matters because airports create exactly the conditions in which impulse buying can flourish. Travellers arrive early, have a fixed departure time and are surrounded by products they may not normally encounter during an ordinary shopping trip.

The research is not new. A study back in 2017 of 343 tourists shopping at duty-free stores in Seoul found that positive emotions were associated with more impulsive purchases, while time pressure also played a role in affective impulse buying.
In other words, the airport is not simply somewhere people happen to shop.
It can change the way they shop.

That has significant implications for the businesses selling inside terminals.

A 2026 travel-retail study by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific & Middle East, covering 36 airports in 21 countries, found that 70% of airport purchases remained impulse-driven. It also found that 56% of responding airports said their commercial revenue was stronger than in 2019.

Stefano Baronci, Director General of ACI Asia-Pacific & Middle East, described the change as a shift away from simply measuring passenger numbers.

“The traditional assumption that commercial performance scales automatically with passenger volumes is no longer reliable,” Baronci said.

His point is important for the airport business. A terminal can handle millions of passengers, but the commercial value of those passengers depends on who they are, how much time they have and what they are prepared to buy.

The same ACI study found that Gen Z and Millennials spend 3.5 times more at airports than Gen X and Boomers when indexed against the older generations. Younger passengers were also more likely to buy electronics and luxury products, while older passengers were more likely to buy alcohol and confectionery.

For retailers, therefore, the passenger is no longer simply a headcount.
They are a consumer profile.

That helps explain the importance of the duty-free shop, where the psychology of travel and the psychology of shopping meet.

The term “duty-free” itself also creates an interesting legal and commercial situation. In the European Union, duty-free sales for travellers moving between EU member states were abolished in 1999. Tax- and duty-free shopping remains available for eligible passengers travelling outside the EU, subject to the applicable rules.
But whatever the tax treatment, the shopping environment remains powerful.

Passengers are excited about their destination. They may have just cleared security and feel that the stressful part of the journey is over. They have time to kill, but also a deadline.

That combination is valuable.

A study published in Tourism Management described airports as unusual retail environments in which passengers can experience anxiety, stress and excitement, while time pressure and impulse-buying tendencies can affect commercial activity.
The airport retailer is therefore selling more than a product.

It is selling to someone who is temporarily in a different state of mind.
That may explain why a bottle of perfume can suddenly appear necessary, or why a traveller who has no interest in shopping decides that a box of chocolates is an essential part of the journey.

Then there is alcohol.

The airport drink has become one of the most recognisable rituals of modern travel. A beer at 9am in a normal high street can raise eyebrows. A beer at 9am beside a departure gate can be interpreted as the beginning of a holiday.

There is a psychological explanation for this. Travelling creates a clear break between ordinary life and leisure, and drinking can become part of that transition.
But there is also a serious operational issue.

The UK Government has spent years examining alcohol consumption at international airports in England and Wales. Its call for evidence received 97 responses from airlines, airports and other stakeholders.

The Government ultimately decided in 2021 not to extend all provisions of the Licensing Act 2003 to airside premises, arguing that airports already operated in a highly secure environment with other safeguards in place.

The Government also noted that it is an offence to be drunk on an aircraft and that airlines can prevent passengers they believe are intoxicated from boarding.

So the airport bar exists in an unusual commercial space.

The business wants customers to eat and drink.

The airline wants passengers to arrive at the gate in a fit state to fly.
The passenger wants to start the holiday as soon as possible.
Occasionally, those interests collide.

The UK Government’s evidence also highlighted concerns about “pre-loading”, with some respondents reporting passengers arriving at airports already partially intoxicated or consuming alcohol before boarding.

This creates a delicate balance for airport operators and retailers. Alcohol is a commercial product, but excessive consumption can become an operational cost.
Then comes the most familiar airport ritual of all: the sudden rush to the gate.
Call it gate-luge psychology.

For an hour, passengers sit comfortably in the terminal. They have coffee, browse shops and stare at their phones. Then the departure board changes from “Gate TBC” to “Gate 42”.

Within seconds, people stand up.

The logic is questionable. If boarding does not begin for another 30 minutes, arriving at the gate immediately rarely provides a meaningful advantage.
But the behaviour makes psychological sense.

The cost of waiting is almost zero. The cost of missing a flight can be enormous.
Passengers therefore tend to respond to uncertainty by moving closer to the thing they are worried about.

Airports understand this behaviour because passenger flow is central to the design of the terminal. Retail, food and beverage outlets are positioned along the routes passengers take between security and their gates.

The commercial objective is not simply to make passengers move.

It is to make them move past something they might buy. This is why the airport can be viewed as a behavioural laboratory.

The passenger arrives anxious about security and the flight. After clearing security, they relax. They see the shops. They have time to spend. They buy something. They eat. Perhaps they have a drink.

Then the gate is announced. The relaxed consumer becomes an anxious passenger again. From a business perspective, that transition is crucial.

ACI’s 2026 research found that product choice accounted for 39% of purchase motivation and price and promotions for another 29%. Ease of access and time efficiency were also important, while experience alone accounted for around 20%.

That suggests airports do not necessarily need to entertain passengers with elaborate experiences to make money. They need to make buying easy.

The wider lesson is that airports are increasingly competing on more than aircraft movements and passenger volumes. Their commercial performance depends on understanding behaviour.

The passenger who arrives early is not simply occupying a seat in the terminal.
They are a potential customer.

The passenger who is anxious about the flight may become an impulse shopper. The passenger who has an hour to spare may buy lunch. The passenger who sees a promotion on the way to the gate may make an unplanned purchase.

And the passenger who suddenly starts speed-walking towards Gate 42 is, at the same time, exactly what the airport needs them to be: a customer who is still inside the commercial environment.

The strange behaviour of airport passengers is therefore not entirely irrational.
The environment encourages it.

We may think we are simply killing time before a flight, but the airport industry has become increasingly sophisticated at turning that waiting time into revenue.
The duty-free shop, the airport bar and the frantic walk to the gate may look like separate parts of the travel experience.

From a business perspective, they are connected.

They are all built around the same valuable commodity: a passenger with time to spend, money to spend and nowhere else to go.

Why we shop, drink and panic at the gate and how airports turn our strange travel habits into business

[137137,47996
127717
post-45473","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-analysis","category-transport","tag-bristol-and-bath","tag-cornwall","tag-devon","tag-dorset","tag-featured-story","tag-gloucestershire","tag-somerset","tag-south-west","tag-wiltshire
<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
