A new pedestrian and cycle bridge has been lifted into place in south west Exeter, providing a link to a development site which is expected to deliver 2,500 homes and 21.5 hectares of employment land.<\/p>\n
The bridge is part of the infrastructure being delivered to support the new development following \u00a355.1m of funding from Homes England’s housing infrastructure fund.<\/p>\n
The South West Exeter development site borders Alphington to the north and to the south extends to the area around the Devon Hotel. The first infrastructure works began on site in August 2020.<\/p>\n
The bridge spans the A379 between Chudleigh Road and the Devon Hotel.<\/p>\n
It was delivered in sections and constructed on the roadside before it was lifted into place in one piece by a large crane. The road was closed for part of the week to enable the operation to be carried out safely.<\/p>\n
Cllr Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council\u2019s cabinet member for highways management, said: “The bridge was lifted into place without a hitch, and we hope that it will be open for public use by the autumn.”<\/p>\n
