Former Spaceport Cornwall boss Melissa Quinn is flying off to join American space sector research platform Seradata.

Quinn had worked at Spaceport since 2014 and became chief executive in January 2021. Her departure was announced a couple of weeks ago.

Prior to her role as head of Spaceport Cornwall, Melissa played a key role in the success of Cornwall Council’s Aerohub project, securing Enterprise Zone status and providing support to multiple aerospace businesses across Cornwall.

Melanie Stricklan, chief executive of Seradata’s parent company Slingshot Aerospace, said: “Melissa’s pioneering work in establishing the UK’s first spaceport, coupled with her passion for space, purpose-driven leadership, aerospace expertise, and strong business acumen, make her an invaluable addition to our team.”

The Spaceport, which is based at Newquay, has had a turbulent year following the failure of a vital mission.

The launch of the first satellite from the Spaceport ended in failure and Virgin Orbit – which was backing the project has since filed for bankruptcy.

Despite the satellites not reaching their final orbit, the Spaceport and Cornwall Airport Newquay teams flawlessly executed ground operations, securing the UK’s first spaceport license.
