Bristol Airport has generated more than 1.7m kWh of renewable energy so far in 2026, 20% higher than last year and equivalent to the power used by around 680 homes annually.<\/p>\n
The record output follows the installation of solar arrays as part of the airport’s target to achieve net zero operations by 2030.<\/p>\n
The arrays power electric buses that transport passengers across the site, all terminal equipment from flight information screens to coffee machines, and runway lighting.<\/p>\n
Clare Hennessey, director of sustainability at Bristol Airport, said: “This year we’ve managed to produce 20% more renewable energy on site compared to 2025, which means less needs to be taken from the national grid. Our investment in solar panels, as well as electrification of buses, are among the initiatives we’ve been rolling out to meet the target.”<\/p>\n
The airport operates a 1.5-megawatt solar farm to the south of the runway and has panels on the roofs of many buildings, including the new Public Transport Interchange.<\/p>\n
Later this year, the airport’s \u00a310m Energy Centre will become operational, using electrically powered air source heat pumps to heat and cool the terminal.<\/p>\n
According to the airport, the centre will make Bristol one of the first UK airports to remove gas heating from its terminal.<\/p>\n
Last month, Bristol Airport announced it was funding research into low-height wind turbines to overcome traditional barriers to wind turbine deployment at airports, such as radar interference.<\/p>\n
The airport has set an interim target to cut carbon emissions across its operations by 73% by 2027 as part of its Sustainability Strategy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
