Ethical bank Triodos has had its B Corp certification renewed \u2013 in the process welcoming the stricter environmental and social performance standards now needed to gain the coveted status.<\/p>\n
The bank, which has its UK headquarters in Bristol, became the first pan-Europe bank to achieve B Corp certification in 2015.<\/p>\n
That accreditation followed the official European launch of the B Corps movement \u2013 which showcases businesses that balance financial profit with positive impacts on people and the planet.<\/p>\n
Now Triodos says its recertification is both a recognition of its progress over the past 11 years and a commitment to continued improvement.<\/p>\n
By participating in the first group assessed against the new, revised standards, Triodos intends to contribute experience to the further development of a certification system that holds companies accountable for measurable positive change.<\/p>\n
Although B Lab \u2013 the non-profit organisation that carries out B Corps accreditation in the UK – does not require holders to publish their recertification results, Triodos Bank has done so as it says it believes in transparency whenever possible.<\/p>\n
The bank, founded in the Netherlands in 1980, said the assessment and independent audit identified opportunities to strengthen its existing practices and supporting documentation.<\/p>\n
These included enhancing the visibility of grievance mechanisms and clarifying how human rights and environmental considerations could be evidenced as part of its procurement decisions.<\/p>\n
It also further developed its due diligence processes for relevant suppliers and set targets for material impact topics that fall outside the scope of the B Corp impact themes.<\/p>\n
Jacco Minnaar, chief commercial officer at Triodos Bank, said: \u201cWe are proud to be among the first financial services organisations to be certified against these stricter standards.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe chose to go through the new process at an early stage, because we see ourselves as a frontrunner in sustainable finance and we welcome the independent challenge to keep improving and to be transparent about where further work is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Triodos operates in five European countries and is the only B-Corp certified bank listed on Euronext Amsterdam.<\/p>\n
Its UK arm celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2025, the year it also won a King\u2019s Award for Sustainable Development.<\/p>\n
It has been voted Best Ethical Financial Provider at the British Bank Awards for four consecutive years.<\/p>\n
