A new cottage cheese production facility to meet growing demand has been opened by dairy firm Rodda’s at its Cornwall site, backed by a £6m investment.

The site, which expands the family-owned creamery’s manufacturing operations beyond the Cornish clotted cream and butter for which it is best known, is expected to produce up to 4,000 tonnes of cottage cheese a year and has created 20 jobs.

Demand for high‑protein, natural dairy products such as cottage cheese has accelerated over recent years, driven by changing consumer diets and interest in versatile, quality and higher‑protein ingredients.

Last year total sales of cottage cheese rose by more than 28%, according to industry reports.

The facility in Scorrier, near Redruth, was officially opened by the Duchess of Gloucester.

Nicholas Rodda, managing director of Rodda’s, said: “Our new cottage cheese facility represents a major investment in the future of Rodda’s and in food manufacturing here in Cornwall.

“It enables us to build on our heritage as a family dairy, use more of every litre of milk we buy from our farming families, and respond to the growing demand for high-quality British dairy products.”

The company says the facility has been designed to expand its dairy manufacturing capability and respond to growing UK demand for cottage cheese.

During the visit, the Duchess of Gloucester sampled products from the new cottage cheese range and unveiled a commemorative plaque.
