University tackles challenges to manufacturing

THE challenges and opportunities facing the manufacturing industry in the West Midlands will be the focus of a conference hosted by the University of Wolverhampton.

Organised in partnership with the Institute of Directors, the Manufacturing Success Conference takes place at the university’s Telford Campus tomorrow.

Highlights of the event include a presentation on the importance of quality by Iain McArthur, manufacturing quality manager at Jaguar Cars, as well as advice on access to finance, growth through exporting and the future of work through the use of new technology.

Jaguar is set to have an increasing stake I the area’s economy due to its major expansion and a commitment to build a new £355m engine plant close to Wolverhampton.

Emma Howitt, corporate marketing manager at the university, said: “Despite tough economic conditions manufacturing remains strong in the West Midlands and Shropshire.

“We are holding this event to bring together both manufacturers and support services to discuss the issues they are facing and to get the support they need to move their businesses forward.”

There will also be an exhibition of various support services available to manufacturers including access to finance, skills development and manufacturing support.

In addition to Mr McArthur, the conference will also hear from Lee Hopley, chief economist of the manufacturer’s organisation, who will speak about the state of the economy, and Doug Mahoney, International Trade Director at UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), who will offer an insight into growth through exports.

Delegates will also have the opportunity to tour the university’s rapid manufacturing facilities and two unique technology projects, Innovation 1st and NTAILS, which showcase the practical applications of new technology to business.

The event, takes place from 8.30am to 2.30pm, and includes a networking lunch. Further details are available from the university.
