JCB chief Bamford among 30 new peers

JCB chairman Sir Anthony Bamford is set to become one of 14 new Conservative peers in the House of Lords.
Some 30 new peers have been named by the main political parties.
Bamford is a prominent donor to the Conservative Party. Since 2002, the Bamford family and their companies have given nearly £2.5m to the Tories.
His Rocester-based excavating machine manufacturing company has enjoyed a lot of success in recent years, not least in selling machines in emerging markets.
Last week it announced one of the biggest single orders in its history – a 900-machine deal from a UK plant hire firm worth more than £53m.
And it recently announced it is to take tenancy of distribution warehouse Blue Planet in Chatterley Valley near Newcastle-under-Lyme, a move which it says will create dozens of new jobs.
Former Birmingham City Council leader Mike Whitby is also to become a Conservative peer, it has been announced.
Nominations for peerages are put forward by each of the Westminster party leaders and are “vetted” by the House of Lords appointments commission.
Each of the three main parties has selected people who have made substantial donations to them in the past.
The 30 nominees will take their seats when the House of Lords returns from its summer recess in September. When they do, there will be 800 active members of the House of Lords.
