Wesleyan strengthens Sickness Board with senior appointment
WESLEYAN Medical Sickness has appointed the former president and chair of the General Dental Council, Hew Mathewson, to its Advisory Board.
Mr Mathewson, whose career in dentistry spans more than 30 years, brings a wealth of experience and professional insight to the Wesleyan Medical Sickness Advisory Board.
The advisory board is a consultative panel offering strategic guidance so that Wesleyan can tailor its financial products and services to more effectively meet the needs of dental and medical professionals.
Speaking about his appointment, Mr Mathewson said: “Dentists run their own practices and most are getting better at the business side of the job. However, there is still a tendency to neglect personal finance issues and often a failure to seek the right professional advice, specific to their needs.
“I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues on the board to help shape the products and services that Wesleyan offers to meet the personal, professional and business needs of dentists at each stage of their lives.”
Mr Mathewson was President of the General Dental Council from 2003 – 2008 and was the Council’s first Chair until December 2009. He has also chaired the Professional Conduct Committee and served on the Health, Education, Postgraduate and Ethics Committees.
He continues to work part time in general dental practice in Edinburgh, where he owns two practices which together form the biggest non-corporate provider in the Scottish GDS.

“Hew’s extensive knowledge and experience will help us to provide advice and guidance so that dentists have the right financial advice and products to meet their particular needs. We are pleased to have someone of his calibre join the board.”
Other members of the Wesleyan Medical Sickness Advisory Board are: Ralph Davies, Shalin Mehra, Professor Steve Field, Sir Kenneth Coleman, Professor Sir Brian Jarman, Professor Parveen Kumar, Sir Roger Vickers, Dr Ernest “Mac” Armstrong, Dr Judy Gilley and Dr John Canning.
