More jobs go at QinetiQ

DEFENCE supplier QinetiQ is to axe a further 50 jobs from its Midlands operation in Malvern. The reduction is on top of the 250 jobs already lost at the Worcestershire base, part of QinetiQ’s Technology Solutions Group (TSG).

The company, which is axing a similar number of posts from its headquarters in Farnborough, has blamed the redundancies on cutbacks imposed by the Government as part of its reduced defence budgets.

The union Prospect has criticised the job cuts and warned vital skills are being lost to what remains one of Britain’s most important industries.

National secretary David Luxton said: “It is yet another example of how cuts to the defence budget ripple through to the private sector. QinetiQ has lost around 800 posts in the last 12 months.

“Skills cannot be turned on or off like a tap. It will have a detrimental effect on future defence capabilities – as well as individuals, families and the local community.”

The union said it was attempting to clarify the full reasons for the redundancies, particularly because it claimed the skills could be utilised in other business areas within QinetiQ’s operations.

In a statement the firm said it had been left with no option than to further review its cost base in order to ensure it remained fully aligned with customer needs.
