New Street Gateway: Work begins on new entrance

WORK to create the main entrance to Birmingham’s revamped New Street Station has taken a step forward with the demolition of a former pedestrian ramp.

Before work on the new entrance could begin, contractors had to clear the old spiral ramp access between the Pallasades shopping centre and Stephenson Street.

The new entrance will open at the completion of phase one of the project in 2012 when the first half of a new £600m Gateway project is opened to passengers.

Upon completion of the project in 2015, the new Stephenson Street entrance will be served by the Midland Metro extension from Snow Hill, funding for which was cleared by the Government last month.

Network Rail is also currently seeking tenders for up to £3m worth of work on the new station concourse.

Bidders will get the chance to work on the construction of glazed partitions surrounding lounges, the balustrade around heads of escalators, stairs and floor void areas and the balustrades to the sides of the entrance ramp and drop off areas.

There will also be metalwork on new retail units and staircases. The deadline for applications is April 15.
