Rolls-Royce announces second major order in a week

ROLLS-ROYCE has won a $200m order from Turkish Airlines for Trent 700 engines to power three Airbus A330 freighter aircraft. The contract includes a TotalCare long-term service agreement.

The deal was announced just a week after the company confirmed an order to supply Trent 900 engines to South Korea’s Asiana Airlines.

The Turkish aircraft, which will be delivered between 2012-2014, are in addition to two Rolls-Royce powered A330 freighters previously ordered, one of which is now in service. Turkish Airlines now has a total of 16 Rolls-Royce powered A330  passenger and freighter aircraft in service or on order to support its growth  strategy.

More than half of the East Midlands based group’s underlying revenues of  £10.8bn last year came from its service offering such as the TotalCare package.

The Trent 700 has nearly 90% of the air freight markets, has captured more than 75 per cent of orders for the A330 in the last three years.

Turkish Airlines chairman Hamdi Topcu said: “Our first Trent 700 powered A330s entered service last September and we have been pleased with both the environmental and efficiency benefits of the engine technology and the support  offered through TotalCare®.”

Nick Devall, Rolls-Royce chief commercial officer – civil aerospace, said: “The Trent 700 is the only engine specifically designed for the A330 and delivers significant payload benefits in operation. Following our flawless entry into service last year, I look forward to our relationship continuing to develop.”

More than 1,300 Trent 700s are now in service or on firm order. In 2010, Rolls-Royce won 11 of the 12 A330 engine campaigns that were announced.
