Brockway tops carpet green league

BROCKWAY carpets, one of Kidderminster’s best-known manufacturers has topped an industry waste recycling table.

The company, which has been making carpets since 1964, was named by Carpet Recycling UK as one of the top performing members of the organisation, which was established to explore alternatives to landfill for carpet waste.

According to CRUK’s 2010 figures, Brockway diverts 83% of its carpet production waste from landfill – up from just 17% in 2009. Only one other UK carpet manufacturer could match this figure.

The achievement complements Brockway’s record in ‘green’ manufacture, which includes its Envirobac carpet backing – an effluent-free process with no harmful emissions and less environmental impact. In addition, Brockway has been working closely with its suppliers to create carpets using natural wool from sustainable sources.

The carpet industry has an average landfill diversion rate of just 6%.

Brockway’s production director Nick Walley said: “The effort put in by Brockway in the past 12 months to recycle our waste has been considerable, as the substantial jump in the figures shows. This success would never have occurred without our employees getting behind the concept and coming up with solutions of their own.

“The CRUK figures relate to our Hoobrook manufacturing site – but we’re also committed to cutting waste from our nearby Spennells plant which houses our offices and warehouse. We’re already making big inroads into our substantial cardboard wastage.”
