Licence granted to £120m casino project

PLANS for a £120m casino, hotel and leisure development at the NEC in Solihull have been boosted by the granting of a casino licence.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council’s licencing committee has given the planned project by Genting Casinos UK a ‘large’ casino licence.

A planning application is due to be submitted very soon for the 592,000 sq ft ‘Resorts World at The NEC’ complex which would comprise a four-star hotel, casino, spa, bars, restaurants and conference facilities.

It is estimated around 1,100 people would be employed at the new development with a further 1,750 jobs created in the construction phase which is due to start before the end of the year.

Genting says it hopes to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating and the complex will add an extra £25m to the local economy when it opens in 2014.

Genting UK executive deputy chairman of Peter Brooks said: “The approved project will bring substantial benefits to Solihull and the wider region in terms of job creation and regeneration and will play a key role in the future prosperity and success of The NEC.”

NEC Group chief executive Paul Thandi added: “I look forward to supporting the Genting UK team through the remaining elements of the process, in particular in securing a planning approval.

“A successful outcome to that work will result in Resorts World at The NEC opening around the start of 2014, when it will represent a fabulous addition not only to the NEC site, but also to the region as a whole.”
