A Birmingham engineer has been elected as one of the youngest-ever Fellows of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Dr Christian Christodoulou, who is AECOM’s regional director for transportation, has advised on projects for the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware Memorial twin suspension bridges and the New Zealand Transport Agency.

He said: “As a child, I was always interested in how materials behaved or how things were built. I was always trying to take a peek at construction sites to understand how structures were built.”

Molly McKenzie, ICE East and West Midlands regional director, said: “Only five other people under the age of 32 have ever been awarded ICE Fellowship, so reaching this high grade is an exceptional achievement and I warmly congratulate Christian on reaching the higher echelons of civil engineering.”

ICE represents 90,000 civil engineers and technicians across the world and its Fellowship is seen as a benchmark for those practising at the top level within the profession.

Christodoulou’s AECOM colleagues were also recognised. Senior engineer Robert Mayou was awarded Chartered Engineer, “MICE”, status and Paul Lawrence and Dominik McCormick were awarded Engineering Technician status, allowing them to use Eng Tech MICE after their names. Dominik, at 18, is the youngest person ever to receive the Eng Tech MICE qualification.

Solihull-based housebuilder CALA Homes has appointed two land directors in the Midlands as part of an active programme of land acquisition to support the region’s growth plans.

It has promoted Dan Forrester from land manager to area land director and has recruited land director David Bignell who previously held the same position at Morris Homes.

Forrester joined the company as a land graduate in 2012 and CALA said he has been instrumental in securing and delivering key sites across Warwickshire, Worcestershire and the Cotswolds.

Bignell has more than 10 years’ experience in the industry and a strong track record in the acquisition and promotion of sites across the West, East and South Midlands.

CALA aims to contract about six sites in the next 12 months to fuel its growth plans in the Midlands.
