Traffic Alert: Major disruption to M6 and M5 after accidents

The West Midlands motorway network is facing major disruption this morning with long delays the M6, M5 and M54.

A legacy of accidents both yesterday and overnight have prompted emergency repairs to crash barriers and the knock-on effect of the work is causing long delays.

The worst affected section is on the M6 southbound between Junction 10 (Walsall / Wolverhampton) and J9 (Wednesbury).

There are two lanes (of three) closed to allow work to be completed.

Highways England is forecasting delays of up to 90 minutes against normal journey times. The situation is not expected to clear until at least 10am.

The problems are having a knock-on effect to traffic joining the M6 at Junction 10a from the M54, with queues back to junction 1 (Featherstone).

The northbound section of the M5 between Junction 2 at Oldbury to the M6 (Junction 8) is also affected, while traffic is also heavier than usual on the A449 northwards between Wolverhampton and Stafford as motorists look to avoid the M6.

Motorists have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys and to consider alternative routes.
