Choctopus sees Birmingham tourist attractions pool their talents

Two of Birmingham’s top tourist attractions have pooled their talents to produce something special this Easter.

In recognition of the opening of the National Sea Life Centre Birmingham’s new exhibit, Octopus Hideout, Cadbury World has created a giant chocolate version of the eight-tentacled sea creature, dubbed Choctopus.

Weighing in at around 30kg and constructed using the equivalent of 667 standard bars of Cadbury Dairy Milk, the Choctopus took two chocolatiers at the Bournville attraction just over two days to make.

Sitting proudly on a dark chocolate rock surrounded by intricate chocolate sea shells, coral and sea anemones, the Choctopus’ tentacles are each adorned with white chocolate button suckers varying in size.

The Choctopus will be joined in its ‘tank’ by a number of brightly coloured fish, as well as chocolate sand which has been finished with a sprinkling of edible glitter to replicate sunbeams shining through the water.

The impressive creation will be on display at The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham from tomorrow (Friday) until Sunday April 30.

Diane Mitchell, marketing manager at Cadbury World, said: “We’re a sucker for a chocolate creation so we couldn’t resist the opportunity to make the Choctopus.

“It’s been fantastic to partner with another popular Birmingham attraction and we’ve no doubt that the Choctopus will make a tentacle-tastic addition to The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham.”

Chris Coventry, marketing manager at The National Sea Life Centre Birmingham said: “Thank you so much to the Cadbury World team for all their hard work. The detail is amazing!

“The Choctopus will take pride of place alongside our new Octopus attraction as an extra special treat for our visitors this Easter.”

Cadbury World has arranged its own Easter entrainment programme. From now until Sunday April 23 – excluding Easter Sunday – the venue will stage live entertainment in an outdoor marquee with magicians and ventriloquists. There will also be Cadbury characters, an Easter egg trail and an Easter bonnet competition.
