Constructor awarded contracts worth £15m for Birmingham projects

A construction company has been awarded contracts worth more than £15m to work on three projects in Birmingham – including one of the city’s most high profile makeovers.

Bouygues UK has secured the work through the Constructing West Midlands framework.

The principal contract has seen Birmingham City Council appoint the company as the main contractor for the £10m revamp to the city’s showpiece Centenary Square revamp.

This will see the public realm outside the Library of Birmingham and the International Convention Centre comprehensively redeveloped, with work getting underway this month.

The revamped square has been designed by Graeme Massie Architects and includes a water feature, forty three 25-metre lighting columns, and a new stop for the Midland Metro.

Bouygues UK has also been awarded a £5.5m contract by the University of Birmingham for the refurbishment of facilities at 52 Pritchatts Road in order to provide teaching space for the Psychology and Brain Dependency unit. The work is currently under way.

Finally, Birmingham City Council has also engaged Bouygues UK to replace the structural cladding on the Elms Farm Primary School, in Sheldon.

Craig Tatton, Bouygues UK’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “Birmingham is currently undergoing significant regeneration and we are pleased to continue to be part of the major improvements going on across the city by delivering the public realm redevelopment at Centenary Square.

“We are also thrilled to be undertaking our first project with the University of Birmingham and continuing our work in the education sector through the refurbishments of its facilities in Edgbaston, as well as a separate project with the Elms Farm Primary School. “
