Traffic alert: M6 re-opens after overnight accident

7.30am: The M6 motorway has been reopened. There is still heavy congestion on routes to junction 2, but that is expected to clear shortly.

6.45am: The M6 is closed southbound between junction 2 and the M1 due to a serious incident.

Diversions are in place but heavy congestion had built past junction 3 before 6.30am. Police are forecasting that it will be mid-morning before traffic returns to normal in the area.

Highways England is advising road users to use the M69 and A5 as an alternative route in order to access the M1. Exit the M6 at J2 and take the M69 northbound, continuing to junction 1 of the M69 (A5 junction). From here, take the A5 southbound, continuing to the junction with the M1 J18 and joining the M1 southbound.

Road users wishing to use the A14 from the M6 southbound are also advised to exit the M6 at J2, however they will then need to take the M69 northbound to the junction with the M1 J21. From here, take the M1 southbound to J19, and exit for the A14 eastbound.
