Pubco MD quits in management shake-up

Peter Dalzell

Pubco and brewer Marston’s has announced a major management shake-up that has seen the departure of a senior director.

The Wolverhampton-based company said Peter Dalzell, managing director of Inns and Taverns, was stepping down from his role and the main board by mutual agreement. He will leave the business on September 29.

The company said that during the last two years, its pub operational management structures had been simplified, with the operational management of Premium Bars and Restaurants, Property and Human Resources being separated out from Marston’s Inns and Taverns and reporting directly into CEO Ralph Findlay.

These changes left Destination pubs and Taverns and Leased Partners within the Marston’s Inns and Taverns operating structure.

The group said it was further simplifying the structure of its senior pub operational management team with Iain Jackson, Operations Director – Destination pubs, and Andrew Carlill, Operations Director – Taverns and Leased Partners, both of whom previously reported to Peter Dalzell, now reporting directly to Ralph Findlay. The company said both men had extensive operational experience with Marston’s.

In making these changes, Marston’s said its objectives were to reduce complexity, management layers and cost, and to ensure that management was as responsive as possible to customer needs.

In an announcement to the markets, Mr Findlay said: “The changes we have made create a leaner, lower cost management structure in pub operations. We remain focused on prioritising quality, service and value while mitigating the impact of well publicised cost pressures affecting the sector.

“I thank Pete – both personally and on behalf of everyone at Marston’s – for his contribution and support over many years. Pete has been instrumental in the growth of our pubs business and leaves a strong operational team in place.”

Mr Dalzell joined the company in 1995 as an Area Sales Manager and in 2003 became Operations Director for Marston’s Inns and Taverns. In 2010, he transferred to Marston’s Pub Company as Operations Director. In 2011, he was appointed managing director of Marston’s Inns and Taverns and is chairman of the company’s Charitable Fund.
