Organisers of the Vélo Birmingham are looking ahead to a 2018 event after more than 11,000 riders completed the gruelling 100-mile course.

Despite some problems, which included a delayed start, problems at feed stations and disgruntled residents inconvenienced by road closures around the route, the inaugural event has been deemed a success.

11,542 riders started the ride – which was not a race – and 97% completed it.

Amongst them was a team of 60 riders from London Midland, who raised more than £3,000 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

“It was a real pleasure to see so many people out and about on their bike, getting to know their local areas,” said London Midland’s managing director, Patrick Verwer.

“Community events such as Vélo are the lifeblood of the city and at London Midland, we are constantly looking for new ways to support and engage with local people across our network. The fact that we could do this and raise money for a truly great cause is fantastic.”

The Vélo included a Business 100 section for 100 corporate teams to be part of.

Dan Salt, cyclist and director at Clearwater International said: “Our team were in high spirits and sporting the Clearwater International gear at the Vélo Birmingham Business 100.

“It was great to be part of the business community, there was good camaraderie among the groups and we greatly appreciated the local support. We’re thrilled to have taken part and to get our team across the line.”
