City of Culture artwork set to go on display

Some of Coventry’s up and coming artists have had their work recognised as part of a competition to promote the bid to become the UK’s City of Culture.

The competition was promoted by city law firm Mander Hadley Solicitors, which tasked entrants to produce artworks depicting “what Coventry means to me”.

The law firm, which also has offices in Kenilworth, received more than 80 entries from art, design and photography students at Coventry College. Directors at the firm have now whittled these down to a final four.

The four finalists will have their work reproduced on two metre-tall signage, which will be displayed outside the firm’s offices at 1 The Quadrant as Coventry waits to hear whether it will be UK City of Culture 2021.

The finalists are:
• Religious Family by Ashleigh Roach;
• Cathedral Scenes by George Millerchip;
• Historic Icons by Billy Clarke; and
• Godiva by Jasmine Baguley.

Jonathan Hall, managing director at Mander Hadley Solicitors, said: “We were delighted with the standard of the entries we have received from the students and it is clear that Coventry means as much to them as it does to us, as a firm based in the city for more than a century.

“It was a very difficult task to identify just four finalists, given the overall standard, but we are delighted to have been able to select Ashleigh, George, Billy and Jasmine to have their work displayed outside our offices, as we wait to hear whether Coventry will be named as UK City of Culture 2021.

“It is a real privilege to be able to showcase the creative talent of Coventry’s young people.”

Mander Hadley Solicitors has supported Coventry’s bid to be UK City of Culture 2021 since its inception and is a member of the Coventry 2021 Club.

The overall winner of the competition will be announced at the firm’s professionals event in the New Year.
