Transatlantic airline launches new European routes from Birmingham Airport

The low-cost carrier launching transatlantic flights from Birmingham Airport is expanding its services from the West Midlands – although this time it is focused on the short haul sector.

Primera Air, which has announced direct flights to New York, Boston and Toronto from Birmingham, is adding services to Mallorca and Malaga.

The airline, which has a strong leisure branding in its native Scandinavia, is looking to roll out its core product model in the UK.

The flights to Mallorca and Malaga will operate daily, starting from May next year.

Andri Már Ingólfsson, the president and owner of Primera Air, said: “We see a stable and high demand for our transatlantic flights from Birmingham to New York, Boston and Toronto.

“It has encouraged us to introduce more flights to leisure destinations in Spain that historically has been our core product and service in which we have an extensive experience.”

William Pearson, Aviation Director of Birmingham Airport, added: “These new short haul routes to will give those looking for sun and beach holidays closer to home greater low-cost choice.

“It is great to see Primera Air recognising Birmingham as a key strategic airport in its growth plans and we look forward to working with the airline when it launches next year.”

The Mallorca and Malaga flights will be operated by Boeing 737-800 aeroplanes with 189 seats in a one class configuration – full economy.
May promises to be a busy month for the airline as it has also chosen that month to launch it transatlantic services.

Based in Denmark and Latvia, Primera Air is part of the Primera Travel Group that operates travel agencies and tour operating companies in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland and Estonia.

The airline operates services to more than 70 airports around Europe.
