Food group 2 Sisters is creating 100 jobs in Sussex as part of its investment in production and technology.

Although the job creation is a consequence of a multi-million-pound investment announced last year, it is the first piece of good news since an undercover investigation into food safety allegations was broadcast in September.

The Birmingham-based group also revealed it lost £28.6m in the three months to July, which related to the period before the investigation caused the temporary closure of its West Bromwich site.

However the manufacturer is ramping up production at its chicken processing facility in Flixton.

Allison Smith, general manager at the Flixton site, said: “This is great news for the site and acknowledges the loyalty and capability of our fantastic colleagues that continue to go the extra mile each and every day to supply our customers with great quality, safe chicken.”

The site has seen investment in new innovative technology and an upgrade of its effluent plant as part of a multi-million pound investment programme across UK Poultry that was unveiled by the business last year.

2 Sisters has been at the centre of several investigations into allegations of substandard practice at its West Bromwich factory known as Site D.

The claims about how it handled were first made in a Guardian/ITV investigation in September, which led to its major supermarket customers launching their own investigations and chief executive Ranjit Singh Boparan admitting “mistakes” were made when quizzed by a Parliamentary select committee.

Site D also closed for more than a month, at a reported cost of £500,000 per week.
