Student accommodation demolished to make way for new housing

How the new housing scheme could look

A former student accommodation block in Birmingham has been demolished to make way for new housing.

Harris Lamb was instructed by Bournville Village Trust to manage the demolition project at 1 College Walk, Selly Oak so the new housing could be developed.

Marcus Andrew, of the firm’s building consultancy team, said: “This three-storey building, known as Gemeindehaus, had previously been used to accommodate overseas students staying and studying in the city.

“The building was earmarked for demolition in order to pave the way for the future development of the site in order to help meet the demand for housing in and around the city.

“Having successfully dealt with the prior approval application which was submitted to the (city) council, we went on to provide specification of works, put the works out to a competitive tender and then manage the project from inception until its completion.”

The seven-week project was completed on time and within budget, with the team ensuring that the property was fully demolished with all foundations properly grubbed out and the site left completely clear for future development.
