Drivers planning to use the M42 have been warned of delays approaching two hours following a serious collision which has closed the motorway.

The incident happened in the early hours and involved a collision between a car and a van.

The M42 is currently closed northbound between Junction 9 (the exit for the M6 Toll) and Junction 10 (the exit for Tamworth).

Police have also closed the southbound carriageway between the slip roads at Junction 9. This closure is an extension of the ongoing road works and has been implemented to assist police with their investigations into the incident.

Diversions have been implemented.

Northbound: Drivers have been told to follow the hollow square symbol.

Exit at Junction 9 and take the A446 (Lichfield Road) northbound. At Bassetts Pole island take the A453 northbound. At Bonehill Road Roundabout take the A5 eastbound to re-join the M42 at Junction 10.

Southbound: The diversion is via the exit and entry slip roads.

Drivers have been advised to avoid the area if they can but to allow extra time for their journeys.
