Building group pledges 100 new apprenticeships for 2018

Building materials and construction business, Tarmac has announced plans to recruit 100 new apprentices this year.

The firm, which made the announcement at the start of National Apprenticeship Week, said the recruitment programme was part of its commitment to help provided a skilled and sustainable workforce to support the future of the UK construction industry.

The company, which has offices in Solihull, is offering roles ranging from HR, commercial and general management through to mechanical and electrical apprenticeships.

Each apprenticeship will last between one and four years with all recruits undertaking a year of vocational training at a network of leading higher education colleges across the UK, as well as receiving expert technical on-site training in their chosen discipline.

The programme covers roles across all of the company’s nationwide business units – asphalt and aggregates, cement and lime, readymix concrete and contracting.

Courtney Lancaster, from Telford, who joined the business as a Commercial Excellence Apprentice said: “Tarmac’s apprenticeship scheme has given me so many great opportunities and experiences, and I’ve been supported to learn and develop by everyone around me. The combination of gaining hands on experience whilst being professionally mentored and earning a wage has been fantastic, and I’d encourage anyone thinking of applying for a job here to go for it.”

Martin Riley, Senior Vice President for Tarmac started his career as an apprentice over 30 years ago, which he said had helped him understand the importance of apprenticeships to the industry.

“As a proud former apprentice, I’m passionate about giving young people the opportunity to train, build careers, and develop within this business,” he said.

“Our apprentices have personalised training and clear development that’s tailored to their strengths and ambitions.

“My aim is to make Tarmac the first company that apprentices think of when considering a career, and we want to work with them to train the future leaders of this industry.”

Tarmac’s ambitions for its 2018 apprenticeship programme have been backed by Government.
