Four former Carillion-owned hotels acquired in undisclosed deal

A hotel owner has strengthened its portfolio with the acquisition of four properties previously owned by collapsed construction group, Carillion.

The four Ibis Styles hotels have all been taken over by Beaconsfield-based Starboard Hotels.

The properties had been marketed over a year ago for offers in excess of £30m but were purchased by Starboard for an undisclosed sum.

The hotels, which will remain as Ibis Styles and be operated by Starboard under franchise from Accor, are located Barnsley, Birmingham NEC, Crewe and Haydock.

The acquisitions, the first for Starboard in 2018, increase its portfolio to 19 hotels, comprising nearly 2,000 rooms across brands including Accor, IHG, Wyndham and Best Western, as well as its own brand Windermere Manor Hotel in the Lake District.

The 166-bedroom Ibis Styles NEC Birmingham is popular with visitors to the exhibition centre and travellers using Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International Station.

Senior debt for the acquisition was provided by Bank Leumi.

Paul Callingham, managing director of Starboard Hotels said: “This is a substantial acquisition for Starboard and an important investment in protecting the future of these hotels and the people who work there.

“The four hotels fit perfectly within our portfolio and represent a significant investment for our business. Individually, the hotels are in excellent geographic locations and further increase our presence in the UK hotel sector across the country.”
